How to use dashes properly in fiction

From Rick:

I’m in a bit of a time crunch during the month of October with several projects to complete by the end of the month (or before). As a result, I’m going to post every other week in October (Oct. 14 and 28).

For this week, I’m going to post a link to an excellent articles on the different kinds of dashes in fiction and their uses (including uses for the hyphen other than joining words). It also talks about differences between US and UK style for these.

Do yourself a favor and take the time to read this article over carefully. Many writers are unfamiliar with the en-dash, and this article shows when and how to use it properly. While most readers won’t know or notice the difference, using the en-dash properly will give your writing a more professional touch.

While my blog might be short, the article makes up for it with its excellent instruction.
